Knowledge of the mass of each sample permits the determination of its wetting phase saturation, defined as the ratio of the volume of liquid in the sample to the total void volume of the sample. The working fluid can be used from a wide range of liquids such as water, octane, other organic solvents, and even salt solutions. The analysis does not require the use of toxic mercury and high pressures.
